Marita Payne Park is a goldmine for bird watchers. The park’s large size and varied habitats allow it to host a diverse array of bird species, ranging from the towering Great Blue Heron to the tiny Ruby-crowned Kinglet. You’ll always be surprised at what you can discover in this tucked away bird hotspot.

Over the last several years, numerous species have been recorded in the park. To keep track of them all, this checklist has been put together. Included within are the common and frequent species of Marita as well as the rarerer and seasonal birds. Some species have been spotted in the park only once or twice!

This checklist put together Marita Payne regular, Kovy Frankel and made possible through citizen science, where non-academics can take part in scientific research by recording and identifying the species they encounter. The bird sightings provided by eBird and iNaturalist proved invaluable for cataloging all these unique bird species. If you’d like to contribute to science and this checklist, give citizen science a shot and gain a new appreciation for the biodiversity around you!
